Captioned Telephone allows people who have difficulty understanding what is being said over the telephone to receive live captions of their telephone conversations.
Captioned Telephone looks and works like an amplified telephone, but everything your caller says is displayed in text, word-for-word while you are listening to the speaker. It is not a TTY, but is a telephone that can receive captions from an operator at the Cap Tel captioning center or through the Maryland Relay VCO service.

How do I call someone who uses a Captioned Telephone?
Dial 1-877-243-2823 to reach the Captioning Service.
When connected, give the Captioning Assistant the phone number that you wish to call. This service enables users of Captioned Telephones to receive captions on their incoming calls.
CapTel Call-Me Cards should be given to people who call you.
Customizable Call-Me Cards can be edited by typing in your name and phone number. You can then print it and share it with others who call you often. These can be also printed on standard Avery 5371 Business Card paper.
Remember, if you have family and friends who call you long distance, remind them to register their preferred long distance provider with CapTel Customer Service, 1-888-269-7477.
Maryland Relay continues Captioned Telephone Trial
On May 12, 2007, the State of Maryland awarded a contract to Hamilton Relay to provide Captioned Telephone service for Captioned Telephone users. The trial will continue until the FCC approves Maryland to offer this service on a permanent basis.
