Services Provided to State Agencies

AI Guidance

AI Enablement helps state civil servants use AI responsibly and productively. If you work for a Maryland state agency, you can gain guidance from us in a few ways:

  • Weekly Office Hours: Maryland State employees and contractors can sign up for free office hours every Monday. The AI Enablement team can answer questions you might have about rolling out AI at your agency, our responsible AI policy, the steps to make an AI intake request, how to turn on generative AI (GenAI) at your agency, and more.

  • Ongoing Implementation Guidance: Maryland state agencies that use AI can request ongoing consultations with the AI Enablement team by emailing [email protected]. We will help your agency get the most out of generative AI (GenAI), use the right data masking techniques to protect sensitive data, confirm the amount of retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) needed to build a large language model, and more.

We also provide all-purpose AI implementation guidance to help agencies responsibly and productively use AI. Read our guide to get started, and email [email protected] if you need additional help.

  • Monthly AI Community of Practice: Anyone at any level of Maryland government (Maryland State, Local, Tribal, and Territorial (SLTT) government entities) is welcome to join Maryland’s AI Community of Practice (CoP). This CoP is a shared space for Maryland’s civil servants to show how they use AI in their daily roles. From demos showing how you can create no-code chatbots to case studies outlining how to scale successful AI pilot projects, this CoP helps everyone upskill, no matter your role or skill level. Email AI@maryland.gov to join.

Access to AI Technology

  • Turn on Generative AI (GenAI): DoIT provides access to Google’s Gemini (if your agency uses Google) and Microsoft’s Copilot (if your agency uses Microsoft). Maryland encourages State staff to use these tools where possible to boost productivity and reduce drudgery.

To turn on GenAI at your agency, email DoIT's intake team at [email protected]; and cc: [email protected]. You can request access for yourself, a specific group of colleagues, or your entire agency.

  • If you request access for a specific group of colleagues, make sure to include their names and email addresses in your request. Please cc your agency's portfolio officer for their awareness.

  • Provide Tools to Build AI Products: If your agency builds and maintains its own AI products in-house, DoIT can help you gain access to the tools (such as architecture, APIs, model training, etc.) needed to fulfill this work.

Email [email protected] and cc [email protected] to request access and/or licenses for the AI tools you need. You can also email [email protected] to ask for guidance on selecting the best AI tools and techniques to build your AI product(s).

Approval for New AI Software

DoIT reviews AI software to ensure their compliance with Maryland's AI policies. If your team would like DoIT to consider new AI software for approved use, email DoIT’s intake team at [email protected] and cc: [email protected].

Make Sure Your Email Includes:

  • The name of the software you would like us to review.
  • What the software does.
  • How you envision yourself and/or your agency using it.
  • Which agency you work for.

Maryland's AI Inventory

As required by Senate Bill 818, the AI Enablement team tracks AI use cases across Maryland State government. If your agency builds and maintains its own AI products (like Maryland Benefits’ SUN Bucks chatbot), your role is to help us track them for inclusion in our inventory.

Share your agency’s AI use cases by submitting them through DoIT's self-service portal. Click the Service Catalog header on the far left, then click General Inquiry to share your use case for DoIT's AI inventory.

AI Training

AI Enablement offers free, asynchronous training on a range of AI topics via InnovateUS.

We also offer bespoke AI training for agencies upon request. Email [email protected] to request a virtual or in-person training on your AI subject(s) of choice.
