About

Data, if used effectively and transparently, can help improve the effectiveness of government services.

The Office of Enterprise Data (OED), led by the State Chief Data Officer, empowers the State of Maryland with trusted data that is easy to use and understand and increases efficiency and responsiveness to the needs of citizens. OED coordinates the efforts of the state’s data officers in each of the state’s executive agencies, who ensure data best practices are followed within their respective agencies. It does this through 4 sub-offices.

  • The Office of Data Operations improves data efficiencies for state agencies through increased awareness, streamlined processes, and the application of resources in innovative and skillful ways to achieve measurable improvement.
  • The Office of Data Management positions data as a strategic asset, maximizing its value through effective management, analysis, and utilization.
  • The Office of Data Practices empowers State agencies to leverage data for innovative solutions that improve the lives of our citizens.
  • The Office of Data Literacy fosters a culture of analytical thinking and evidence-based decision-making and facilitates learning to enhance employees' data acumen across the state.

OED also oversees Maryland’s Open Data Program, a national leader that makes data open and easy to find. It provides transparency so businesses, residents, visitors, and civil servants can use state data to aid their decision-making. The open data portal lets the public identify, analyze, visualize, and export over 1,000 data sets.
